5 Logical Steps To Creating A Good Dissertation Defense Presentation

The preparation for your thesis defense is a complex process that requires your time, efforts, and creativity. Your dissertation is now complete, and what is left to do is only to create and perform a simple and clear presentation. The main role in your success here plays the content of your thesis, the work that you have done, not as much your speech, but you still want to sound professional.

Steps to Follow When Preparing for the Dissertation Defense

Although it might seem frustrating in the beginning, the preparation becomes much easier when you identify the main blocks of work you will have to do. Consider these five logical steps on how to create your dissertation defense presentation:

  1. Find out the requirements. Learn as much as possible about the expected format and length of your presentation. Work on your battle field.

  2. Read your thesis one more time to review the complete dissertation. Build the presentation concentrating only around your theme. This will minimize your chances of getting questions that are off the topic and may be difficult to answer.

  3. Prepare the necessary number of slides. It is better to do them in a conservative style, without animation and sound. First slide should show the title of your thesis. Add an informative text to each slide using large simple fonts.

  4. Prepare the speech. In your oral presentation you don't just read the text from your slides, but rather give an explanation and some additional information to each of them. Make the pieces of your speech of such length that you will be able to say it within the time limits.

  5. Have some practice. Do the rehearsal, trying to speak slowly, eloquent, thoughtfully. Remember that it's normal to pause for a couple of seconds every once in a while. First, try to practice on your own, probably in front of a mirror. Then ask your friends to be your audience, consider their comments, and answer their questions.

When your preparation is done, stay confident. Don’t be afraid of weird questions. When you don't know the answer, say it, you may also add a short explanation of your assumptions, support them with the reasons, and give the suggestions for further research. Answer your questions short and strictly to the topic. Don't worry that you are not able to fit all the information related to your dissertation in the presentation, you can't include everything anyways. Remember to thank your audience at the end of your speech.
